| Talib Kweli |
Talib Kweli became friends with Mos Def when they were both in high school in Brooklyn. They started their performing careers together, forming the group Black Star, along with the producer Hi-Tek. After the release of their first album, titled Black Star, Mos Def left to begin a solo career.
Kweli also went solo, to critical acclaim. He started out as, and has remained, a singular voice for alternative hip hop. As a "conscious" MC, he has consistently rapped about what he thinks is important for the larger hip hop community – politics, education and culture all figure into his lyrics and rhymes. But Kweli never loses site of the beat or the flow, and his message music still makes for a hot night on the dance floor. |
